The monthly horoscope on Sigastra is computed before it is written. For each sign, the positions that define the month are worked out from observatory-grade ephemerides — where the Sun changes sign, where the new and full moons fall, and what Mercury, Venus and Mars are doing — and the reading follows from those. A forecast built the other way round, with the text first and a transit found to fit it, would read the same with the month swapped.

The astrological month does not begin on the first
A calendar month starts on the first and runs to the twenty-eighth, thirtieth or thirty-first depending on which one it is. The astrological month is a different thing: it is the Sun’s passage through one zodiac sign, which begins around the twentieth of one calendar month and ends around the twentieth of the next.
That offset is why a monthly horoscope keyed to the calendar and one keyed to the Sun’s sign describe overlapping but different periods. Neither is wrong; they are answering the same question about different thirty-day windows, and the difference is about three weeks of overlap.
The Moon’s cycle is a third period again — about twenty-nine and a half days from one new moon to the next, which is shorter than most calendar months and drifts backwards through them. Three cycles, three lengths, none of them lined up: that mismatch is most of why "this month" means slightly different things depending on who is using it.
What actually moves in thirty days
The Sun covers about thirty degrees in a month, which is exactly one sign — that is what makes it the month’s spine. The Moon completes a full circuit and a bit, passing through every sign once. Mercury covers anywhere from nothing at all, when it is stationary, to about forty degrees when it is at full speed.
Venus covers roughly twenty to thirty degrees and Mars about fifteen to twenty, so both can change sign inside a single month. Jupiter moves two to three degrees, Saturn about one, and the outer three move so little that a monthly reading can mention them but should not build on them.
The two lunations are the fixed points. Each month contains one new moon and one full moon, occasionally two of one of them, and both are computable years in advance. A monthly forecast that names where those fall is standing on something checkable rather than on a mood.
New moon and full moon — the two halves of a month
The new moon is the month’s starting point in the tradition: Sun and Moon in the same degree, nothing yet visible, which is read as the moment to set something in motion rather than to judge it. Whatever sign it falls in gets that beginning, and every other sign gets it in whichever of its houses that sign occupies.
The full moon comes about two weeks later, with the Sun and Moon opposite each other — which is why it is read as the point of visibility and, often, of decision. Something started two weeks earlier is far enough along to be seen for what it is. Eclipses are new and full moons that fall close to the lunar nodes, and they carry the same shape more decisively.
A useful thing to know: because the lunar cycle is shorter than most calendar months, the same phase drifts about a day earlier each month. Over half a year that adds up to a week, which is why phase advice pinned to a date rather than to the phase stops being accurate quite quickly.
What a monthly reading by sign can honestly claim
It can describe the shape of a month for people who share a Sun sign: which themes are prominent, when the turning points fall, and what the pace is likely to be. Those are real statements, computed from real positions, and they apply to one twelfth of the population.
What it cannot do is tell you which part of your life the month touches. That is decided by your houses, which come from your exact birth time and place, and two people with the same Sun sign born hours apart can have the month land in completely different areas.
