Mercury in Astrology: Mind, Communication & Learning

Mercury rules the intellect and everything downstream of it: reasoning, perception, language, learning, curiosity, and the exchange of information. It describes how you gather facts, sort them, and put them back out as speech and writing. It also governs the practical, everyday mind — short trips, messages, schedules, commerce and the countless small mental transactions that keep life moving.

In a birth chart, Mercury shows your natural learning style and how you’re likely to communicate under normal conditions. Every part of that myth maps onto the planet’s meaning: speed, cleverness, crossing boundaries, and carrying messages from one realm to another.

Mercury’s glyph is ☿ — a crescent above a circle above a cross. Read from the top down it suggests the receptive mind (crescent) sitting above spirit (circle) and matter (cross), the intellect that mediates between the two. It is the only classical glyph to combine all three of these elements, which fits Mercury’s role as the great connector and translator.

Astronomically, Mercury is the smallest planet and the closest to the Sun, which is why it never strays far from it in our sky — at most about 28 degrees. It is fast, completing an orbit in just 88 days, and it turns retrograde three or four times a year for about three weeks at a time. These frequent retrogrades are the origin of the famous “Mercury retrograde” periods, discussed below.

A few times each year Mercury appears to slow, stop and move backwards through the zodiac. This is an optical effect — an illusion created as faster-orbiting Earth overtakes it, much as a slower car seems to drift backwards when you pass it — not an actual reversal.
